Reviving Heritage: The Blenheim Palace Project

Whites Decorating was entrusted with the immense responsibility of restoring the magnificent Blenheim Palace, a world-renowned heritage site. This challenging endeavour included the refurbishment of the palace's exterior and interior spaces, from wooden sash windows to grand staircases and lavish bedrooms. This ongoing project, which commenced 12 months ago, symbolizes our commitment to preserving and enhancing architectural masterpieces.

A Palatial Restoration

Exterior Transformation: Rejuvenating Time-Honoured Charm

The exterior phase involved meticulous refurbishment of all wooden sash windows, some reaching up to 3 meters in height. Each window underwent an exhaustive process: removing flaking paint, rubbing down, re-puttying, applying a 2-part wood filler, priming, and ultimately coating with two layers each of oil-based exterior undercoat and gloss. The first phase saw the successful completion of 30+ windows, and the second phase included an additional 54+ windows, along with the windows of the Orangery.

We also restored the oak handrails and revitalised the black railings on the side of the Palace facing the Italian Garden. This process involved scraping flaking surfaces, smoothing with a wire brush, and applying multiple coats of durable black Hammerite paint.

Interior Elegance: Perfecting Majestic Spaces

The interior rejuvenation began with the cleaning and preparation of grand staircases. The metal railings were adorned with black oil-based opaque paint, and gold gilding was subtly applied to accentuate areas of detail.

In the bedrooms, we undertook the delicate task of decorating all ceilings while preserving the velvet wall surfaces, paintings, murals, and furnishings. Flaking lath plaster ceilings were refurbished and reinforced with new plaster, shellac-based primer, and three coats of paint.

Orangery Oasis: Unveiling a Timeless Beauty

We had the privilege of refurbishing the famous Orangery at Blenheim Palace. All plaster was restored, unsightly stains were concealed with Stain Block, and a primer was applied followed by paint. The interior windows were also revamped with two coats each of oil-based primer and gloss, matching the exterior refurbishment completed in phase two.

The project remains ongoing, with further phases planned for 2024 and beyond to ensure this globally acclaimed property maintains its splendour.
